How Does She Do It?

We want to hear how you do it, Moms!  Are you a mom in Edmonton, a career mom, a stay-at-home mom, an entrepreneur mom, something somewhere in between?  Contact us (hello@urbaninfant.ca) to be profiled!

Tell us about you, your children and where you live

My name is Nadia. I am originally from Trinidad and came to Edmonton to study at the U of A. I met my husband here and eventually got married and started a family. I have 2 very active boys ages 4 and 2. I have a couple of small home businesses that allow me to stay home and entertain my kids.  I try to find humour in everything which is not hard with kids. As well as try to make women feel beautiful and confident about themselves through positivity.

Do you have help? (incl childcare, housework, personal assistant)

Ha! I wish. My in-laws are in their golden years so asking them to babysit regularly is a bit tiring on them.  I get a babysitter when my hubby and I need some time away from the kids but that is few and far between.

Best hobby?

I used to have those when I had time. Right now I catch myself chatting on Twitter and watching my pvr’d shows.

Extracurricular activities for you?

My hubby works for the local Professional Soccer team in town so attending their home games is pretty exciting to be a part of. Also since I’m the stay at home mom in our cul-de-sac, I’ve been designated the neighbourhood watch dog. I volunteer for Cariwest and their events during the summer as well.

Extracurricular activities for your babe/children?

My kids love being outside during the summer. This year I planned to go to every spray park in the city, visiting the farmer’s market every week and teaching the kids about the garden.

What does a typical family day look like to you (Saturday/Sunday)?

My kids have breakfast and watch kids tv and then by 10:30 we are out the door to do errands or go to a park. If it is rainy, we go to Chapters, a toy store, the Library or the mall. I try to pick places that we don’t spend any money.  By 2pm we are back home so that the 2 year old has a naptime.  During that time, I work on my business and the 4 year old plays with his toys or does a craft.  At 4pm, I wake up the 2 year old and start dinner. By 5:30, we eat dinner. Around 7pm we have bath time. I let them watch tv till 8:30 then we start bedtime. We read bedtime stories, sing, shadow puppets then lights out around 9:30pm.

Who cooks dinner?

The hubby is away often, so I do all the cooking. My hubby can cook, but he tells me that I’m better at the cooking so he “prefers” that I cook. My 4 year old likes helping me in the kitchen.

How does the grocery shopping get done, by whom, with the kids, and do you use coupons?

I flyer shop to get the best deals. I love Airmiles, so I do shop at Safeway for most of my groceries. I don’t think I’m ever going to run out of toilet paper. Also I take the kids most of the time so that they can pick out what fruits they want to eat for that week, types of cereal and so on.  They love putting things from the cart onto the conveyor belt.  I do savour the days when I get to shop without the kids. It is like a mini vacation.

How often do you buy something for yourself?

I only buy something for myself if I need to go somewhere fancy.

Do you exercise and if so, how/when do you fit the time in to do that?

This is something that I’ve been trying to do more of in the last few months. I started eating healthier so I’m having more energy to literally run after the kids. I mow the lawn and do the gardening, and I shovel in the winter. Does that count?

Favourite movie?

I have so many. I am a sucker for romantic/funny movies. I also do not mind eye candy like Karl Urban.

Favourite nookie song?

I love Caribbean music which involves a lot of bumpin’ and grindin’ to the beats.

Favourite beverage special coffee, cocktail?

I do not drink coffee (insert  *gasp* here).  I do enjoy a glass of wine, rum n’ coke or a  Strongbow during cocktail hour.

Favourite pair of shoes?

I live in flats as I am running after the toddlers.  I own exactly 3 pairs of high heels and  love wearing them.

Cannot leave home without it’ item?

One of my home businesses involves  makeup so I never leave home without a bold lip gloss.

Thank you for sharing with all of us Nadia!  Thanks for being an Urban Infant reader!
